Grammy Award winner Mark S. Doss returns to San Francisco Opera

Global opera star Mark S. Doss is returning to San Francisco as King Thoas in Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride, with performances through June 29th. This is his fourth role with the San Francisco Opera since 1990.

Following his work in San Francisco, Mr. Doss will return to Portland, Oregon as Escamillo in Carmen. Mr. Doss opened his 2006-2007 season in November as Mephistopheles in Portland Opera's Faust, and while in town sang the National Anthem for the Portland Trail Blazers home game versus the Los Angeles Lakers.

Earlier this season, Mr. Doss starred as Mephistopheles in the Kalamazoo Symphony's Faust (Michigan, USA). The Kalamazoo Gazette's review applauded his performance, saying he "proved remarkable as the nefarious demon."

In April, Mr. Doss performed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as the bass soloist in Dvorak's Stabat Mater, which was presented in collaboration with the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra. In the summer of 2006, he was welcomed as a featured singer at the Santa Fe Opera's 50th Anniversary Arias Gala, which highlighted the opera company's renowned apprentice program and celebrated singers, including Mr. Doss, who are enjoying successful careers on the world stage.

Also this season, Mr. Doss performed in his fifth role -- Jochanaan (John the Baptist) in Salome -- since 2004 at Milan's world-famous Teatro alla Scala (La Scala). Singing Jochanaan in later performances, Mr. Doss agreed to perform the role of the First Nazarene for the first three performances, which were taped for television.

This past December, Mr. Doss returned for an encore performance at the Civic Opera House, home of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, as the bass soloist in Handel's Do-It-Yourself Messiah. Mr. Doss has delighted Chicago audiences for years, having appeared on the same stage last season as Alidoro in La Cenerentola (Cinderella) and Escamillo in Carmen. He has performed in 10 seasons at Lyric Opera of Chicago since 1984.

Mark S. Doss is featured in the recently released CD of Mefistofele (the Title Role) recorded live with Oper Frankfurt on the hr-musik.de label. The January edition of Opernwelt applauds his performance, saying," Mark S. Doss can exist beside great predecessors such as Nazzareno de Angeles or Samuel Ramey with luster." Mr. Doss also appears on a DVD of Verdi's Aida, recorded live at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. Reviewers had high praise for his work, recognizing "Another fine performance... from the powerful American bass, Mark Doss (Amonasro)," who was able to "subtly break free of the ‘stand and deliver' directions and create a huge amount of emotion in his face and voice" (Reviewer Ltd., UK).
